The Snake

Portland Institute for Contemporary Art - June 2017

The Snake was a group exhibition at the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art that featured artists DB Amorin, Judy Cooke, Jessica Diamond, Marcus Fischer, keyon gaskin, Daniel Godinez Nivón, and Kameelah Janan Rasheed. Being one of the first major exhibitions in PICA’s new permanent home at 15 NE Hancock, the design for The Snake sought to establish some of the many uses that the cavernous warehouse space could hold. Exhibiting DB Amorni’s video installation in the same room as Jessica Diamond’s monumental wall paintings presented an interesting challenge, which we overcame be periodically dimming the lights, allowing the video work to surface in the space. The effect of a 60-second fade of the gallery lights made it feel as if a cloud were passing overhead. Curated by Kristan Kennedy. Exhibition Design by Spencer Byrne-Seres and Kristan Kennedy. Documentation by Evan LaLonde.
